What Artists Reveal About the Impact of Collaborative Art

What happens when you ask mural artists what they enjoy most about creating collaborative art?

Although each artist brings their own style and approach, clear themes begin to emerge. After speaking with artists working in schools and communities across Australia and internationally, I began to see recurring ideas that help explain why collaborative art is important.

These insights aren’t about the technique or materials, they’re about people, participation, and the shared experience of creating something together. They reveal what really happens beneath the surface of a collaborative artwork.

Ownership Matters

Many artists spoke about the importance of participants helping shape the final artwork.

When people contribute ideas, stories, colours, or paint strokes, they develop a stronger connection to the artwork. It becomes something they helped create rather than something created for them.

Confidence Grows Through Participation

Several artists described seeing participants move from hesitation to confidence.

People who initially feel nervous about painting often discover they are capable of contributing meaningfully. As the project develops, confidence grows alongside the artwork itself.

Connection Happens Naturally

Artists repeatedly mentioned the conversations, interactions, and relationships that form while painting together.

Collaborative art creates opportunities for people to connect in ways that don’t always happen in everyday settings.

Every Group Creates Something Unique

A recurring theme was surprise.

Artists enjoy seeing unexpected ideas emerge and watching groups create something that could never have been planned by a single person working alone.

The Process Matters as Much as the Artwork

Many artists spoke less about the finished mural and more about the experience of creating it together.

The memories, conversations, confidence, and sense of achievement often become just as important as the artwork itself.

Collaborative Art Builds Belonging

Whether in schools or communities, artists described collaborative murals as a way of helping people feel connected to a place and to each other.

When people contribute to a shared artwork, they often develop a stronger sense of pride, ownership, and belonging.

What stands out most is that artists rarely talk first about paint, design, or technique.

Again and again, the artists highlighted confidence, connection, participation, ownership, and belonging. The artwork becomes the visible result of something deeper happening within the group.

That is one of the reasons collaborative art is important in schools and communities.
