Painting together as a family is a fun and flexible way to connect creatively. It’s easy to set up, works for all ages, and can become a special tradition you return to during holidays or quiet weekends. Here’s a simple process you can follow to create your own family collaborative artwork at home:
Step 1 – Messy Playing 🎨
Start with a shared canvas in the middle of the table on an old sheet or party tablecloth. Use 3–4 paper cups or small containers with a brush in each, placed in a tray to stop them falling over. Alternatively, squeeze a few 2cm blobs of paint onto a paper plate for easy reach.
Everyone adds marks or simple shapes — think dots, spirals, circles, and arches — especially around the edges. Cover the artwork, have fun, and remember there’s no right or wrong here — just playful exploration and colour!
💡 Family Tip:
If you’ve got a wide age range, let the little ones start first, then take turns adding marks and circles. “Do three circles in each colour” is my favourite first instruction — it’s actually an open invitation to join in!
Step 2 – Exploring 🌀
Once the first layer is dry, introduce new patterns and switch to a slightly smaller brush. (If the first was 1 inch, try medium next.) Using progressively smaller brushes as the layers rise creates lovely depth and visual sophistication.
Stick to three or four colours from the same colour family to keep the artwork harmonious.
💡 Family Tip:
This is where teamwork really shines. Each person builds on what others have done — reacting, being inspired, and adding something new. Encourage everyone to see how every mark has its place. You can repeat this stage over time, adding new layers whenever you like. Between sessions, hang it up — it’s a beautiful reminder of your shared creativity.
Step 3 – Bling! ✨
Add highlights using paint pens, doodles, dot stickers, or gem stickers to finish your artwork together. This stage has a different, calming energy that everyone enjoys — and best of all, no brushes to wash!
💡 Family Tip:
Paint the edges in a soft grey blend, sign your names on the back, give your artwork a title, and hang it up proudly for daily admiration.
