A Little Game for Listeners 🎲✨
Want to add a spark of fun to your listening? In my very first set of episodes I’ve hidden a Pattern Play Challenge inside the episodes! I plan to do another each year.
Here’s how it works:
- In Episode 1, I explain the game.
- From Episodes 2–9, I share one special letter each week.
- Collect them all, put them together in the right order, and you’ll discover a secret page on my website!
👉 Just add the word you uncover to the end of this link:
PaintingAroundisFun.com/[secret word here]
That page will reveal a creative challenge using the Pattern Play prompts in my Beginner’s Guide to Collaborative Art. It’s a playful little bonus for listeners who love puzzles and creative surprises.

So if you’re ready to spark creativity, build connection, and have some serious fun with paint – follow now, and join me in an episode Easy Collaborative Art!
Below is a quick ‘How to Start’ guide for creating easy collaborative art with a group of beginners.
Imagine you are going to paint with a group of beginners and want to do a group art project with them.
This is a process you might follow:
Step 1: Messy Playing
Start with freedom. Use larger brushes to cover the canvas with broad strokes, swirls, and clusters of repeated marks over a coloured underpainting. Don’t worry about perfection – this is about loosening up and enjoying the flow. Easy collaborative art thrives on playfulness, so encourage everyone to try circles, spirals, dots, or arches swooping in from the edges. The goal is to build confidence and let go of hesitation as the group art project begins.
Step 2: Exploring
Once the background feels alive with exciting brushstrokes and has dried, move into layering patterns. Use the Pattern Play resources to add simple patterns and marks that anyone can copy or adapt. Add more clusters of repeating marks, overlapping patterns in different sizes and colours, watching the visual richness build as you respond to what each other adds.
Facilitator’s Tip: Use progressively smaller brushes as the layers rise to create depth and visual sophistication. This stage turns the artwork into something interesting and shared, even if everyone is “just experimenting.”
Step 3: Bling!
Now it’s time for playful finishing touches. Use paint pens to decorate and add embellishments on and around the patterns and shapes. Have fun with your own doodle ideas, or copy ideas straight from the Pattern Play resources. You can also add stick-on gems or dot stickers for extra sparkle. These additions pull the group art project together and help every painter feel proud of their part in the collaborative artwork.
This is the beginner-friendly way to start an easy collaborative art project with Pattern Play – simple, relaxed, and enjoyable for all ages and abilities.
